Mask-Making
Everybody loves making (and wearing) MASKS. My method allows a mask to be made, in a day, using card and masking tape to build up the structure, be it of Person, Animal, Bird, Fish, Bug, whatever. This is then coloured with tissue paper and PVA, then finished with a mass of resources (coloured card, string, fur, tinsel, coconut fibre etc.).
I BRING EVERYTHING (INCLUDING THE MASK BASE) to enable each pupil to end the day with a mask that they can wear. No long drying times!! These Masks can be tied in to any number of curricular areas, such as Mini-Beasts, Ancient Greeks, Aztecs, Rain Forest Creatures, Ancient Egypt, African Traditional- style Masks, you name it. They can also be used for DRAMA or as a springboard to CREATIVE WRITING.
I have worked right through all of the Key Stages with this method and can manage up to three classes in a day, with help from mums and dads who are invited in. They will love the day! The Masks make a wonderful display, if you can persuade the children to not take them home!!
